- Description: Google Lens, Apple Live Text, AI assistants, your tablet's own recognition and Penlo, compared for real handwritten notes: messy writing, many pages, and finding the text again.

Handwriting OCR has changed more in the last two years than in the twenty before. Old OCR read letter by letter and fell apart on anything messier than block capitals. Today's best tools read a whole page at once and use the context to settle words you'd struggle to read yourself.

So which one should you use? It depends on where your handwriting lives and how much of it there is. Here's how the main options compare for real notes, as of October 2026.

**Quick picks:**
One page on paper: **Google Lens** or **Apple Live Text**
Messy handwriting, one page at a time: **an AI assistant** (ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini)
Notebooks on an e-ink tablet, all of them: **Penlo**

## What matters for notes

- **Messy handwriting.** Notes are written fast. A tool that only reads neat writing isn't much use.
- **Volume.** Converting one page is easy. Converting a year of notebooks, and keeping up with new ones, is a different job.
- **Where the text ends up.** Text you can't find again is barely better than handwriting. Search matters as much as recognition.

## Google Lens

Free on Android and iPhone, and built into the Google app and Chrome. Point your camera at a page, or open a photo or screenshot, select the text and copy it.

**Good for:** a page of paper notes, a whiteboard, a sticky note. **Less good for:** anything in bulk. Every page is a separate photo, and the text goes wherever you paste it.

## Apple Live Text

Built into iPhone, iPad and Mac. You can select text in any photo or screenshot, including handwriting, and copy it. Nothing to install.

**Good for:** quick grabs if you're already on Apple devices. **Less good for:** very messy writing, and anything beyond a page or two.

## What happened to Microsoft Lens?

Microsoft retired its Lens scanning app in 2025: it left the app stores in the autumn and stopped scanning on 15 December 2025\. Microsoft now points people to scanning in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app. If a guide recommends Lens, it's out of date.

## AI assistants: ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini

Upload a photo or a PDF page and ask for a transcript. Because these models read the whole page in context, they cope with messy handwriting far better than classic OCR, and you can ask for the result tidied up, as bullets, or translated.

**Good for:** a hard-to-read page you need right now. **Less good for:** regular use. It's one upload at a time, the text lives in a chat, and models sometimes "improve" a word you actually wrote, so check names and numbers against the original.

## Your tablet's own recognition

If you write on an e-ink tablet, it can probably convert handwriting already. BOOX and Supernote can recognise notes on the device, reMarkable converts a page when you ask, and Kindle Scribe emails you the text. It works well for a page now and then, but the text stays on the tablet. Our guide to [converting handwritten notes to text](https://www.penlo.app/blog/convert-handwritten-notes-to-text/) covers each device.

## Penlo: every notebook, automatically

Penlo is built for the case the others don't cover: lots of handwritten notebooks on an e-ink tablet. Your tablet saves each notebook as a PDF to [Dropbox](https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/AABLNJrF%5FJ2kOZ9HfDO-ZEehC58Pc2aHxSA?src=global9&ref=penlo.app) or OneDrive, and Penlo reads every page with Google Gemini, the same kind of model that makes AI assistants good at handwriting. You don't upload anything.

The page and its text, side by side.

The text is cleaned up as it's read: lines broken at the edge of the page are joined, unclear words are settled from context, and punctuation is tidied. Each of these is a switch you can turn off. If a word is still wrong, you fix it once and your correction is kept.

Choose how much cleanup you want.

Then every notebook is searchable from any browser, and you can ask Penlo AI questions about what you wrote. More in [Clean text from messy handwriting](https://www.penlo.app/blog/clean-text-from-messy-handwriting/).

## Tips for better results, whatever you use

- **Give it the whole page.** Context is what modern recognition uses to work out unclear words.
- **Write headings and dates.** They make the result easier to scan and to search.
- **Check names and numbers.** These are the words context can't help with.
- **Keep the original.** Text is for finding things; the page is the record.

If your notebooks live on an e-ink tablet, the easiest setup is [Dropbox](https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/AABLNJrF%5FJ2kOZ9HfDO-ZEehC58Pc2aHxSA?src=global9&ref=penlo.app): BOOX tablets save to it automatically, and Penlo can import every notebook already there in one go.
