reMarkable can search your handwriting, but only with a Connect subscription and only inside its own apps. This guide connects your reMarkable to Penlo instead: you export notebooks as PDFs to Dropbox or OneDrive, and Penlo turns every page into text you can search from any browser. No Connect subscription needed.

What you need
- A reMarkable: Paper Pro, Paper Pro Move or reMarkable 2.
- A Dropbox or OneDrive account. Not sure which? See Dropbox vs OneDrive for e-ink notes.
- Your reMarkable account login, for my.remarkable.com.
Step 1: Add Dropbox or OneDrive as an integration
- On a computer, go to my.remarkable.com and log in.
- Open the menu in the upper-left corner and choose Integrations.
- Accept the terms and click Confirm.
- Click Add next to Dropbox or OneDrive and sign in.
The integration appears on your tablet once it syncs.
Step 2: Export a notebook as PDF
- On the tablet, open My files.
- Press and hold the notebook, then tap Export in the top bar. On the Paper Pro Move, open the three-dot menu and choose Export.
- Choose Dropbox or OneDrive. The notebook is saved there as a PDF.
Export to the same place every time and note which folder the PDFs land in: that's the folder you'll give Penlo.

Step 3: Connect Penlo
- Sign up at notes.penlo.app. Every feature is free for 7 days, no card needed.
- Pick reMarkable as your device, then Dropbox or OneDrive as your storage, and sign in to the same account your tablet uses.
- Choose the folder where your reMarkable exports land.
That's it. From now on, each PDF that arrives in that folder is picked up within moments: Penlo reads every page, cleans up the text, writes a short summary and makes it searchable alongside the rest of your notebooks. The full tour is in Getting started with Penlo.

Troubleshooting
I don't see Dropbox or OneDrive in the Export menu
Check that the integration is listed under Integrations on my.remarkable.com, and that the tablet is online and has synced since you added it.
The PDF is in Dropbox but not in Penlo
Make sure the folder chosen in Penlo (Settings › Sources & sync) is the one the PDF landed in, then press Sync now in Penlo.
Do I need reMarkable Connect?
No. Exporting to Dropbox and OneDrive works without a subscription, and Penlo does the handwriting search.
Menus change with software updates. If a step doesn't match your tablet, see reMarkable's integrations guide.
